Australia is facing the imminent collapse of the aged and community care system as we know it. Inadequate funding of these services is placing their quality and their very existence at risk. With the current, and growing, ageing population Australia can not afford to lose these vital care services. Already approximately one half of older women and over one third of older men will use residential aged care at some time during their life. The likelihood of using community care services is much higher than that. If Government does not act to urgently address the funding issue older people and their families will not be able to access services when they need them. Sooner or later more providers will start closing their doors across the country as the Salvation Army has done. Recent items in all areas of the media - television, print and radio all show that it is not only providers what have concerns, but general public is far from happy with the outcomes of our aged care system.
